Who Are The Ventures:
In 1958, Bob Bogle and Don Wilson formed the nucleus of the original music group, The Ventures. The duo was joined a few years later by Nokie Edwards to record "Walk, Don't Run". The song hit Billboard's Singles Chart on July 18, 1960 and peaked at #2. The rest, as they say, is history. The band became one of the most popular and biggest selling acts of the 1960s, and was prolific during the 60's in terms of touring and recording, particularly albums.
Since that spectacular beginning, The Ventures - later joined by Mel Taylor, then Gerry McGee, and more recently Bob Spalding and Leon Taylor - have gone on to help define a frequently overlooked branch of rock and roll music - Instrumental Rock. The band is credited by countless guitar legends as being a favorite or an influence. The Ventures style and their music have, from day one, been unique and groundbreaking.
More than 50 years later - with record sales at 100 million plus - with 14 songs that hit the Singles Charts - with 38 LPs that hit the Album Charts (including their smash seasonal Christmas album) - with a lineup that remains solid - The Ventures style and sound is as pure and powerful as ever.
The Ventures are:
•Don Wilson - Rhythm Guitar - (co-founder in 1958)
•Bob Bogle - Lead and Bass Guitar- (co-founder in 1958)
•Nokie Edwards - Lead and Bass Guitar- (joined in 1960)
•Gerry McGee - Lead and Bass Guitar- (joined in 1968)
•Bob Spalding - Lead and Bass Guitar- (joined in 1981)
•Leon Taylor - Percussion - (joined in 1996 after the passing of his father, Mel Taylor)
The Legend Lives On
The Ventures remain active, recording and touring to the delight of fans around the world. It seems every year holds something new and surprising for them. 2008 marked the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the band, truly a remarkable accomplishment. It also saw their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band celebrates their official 50th Anniversary in 2009, with a special tour in Japan, shows in the US and Canada, and multiple CD releases.
The Ventures are considered by many to be the greatest "surf band". While it is true that The Ventures style and music helped define that musical genre as much as anyone, they are much more than that. Surf is just a subset of what The Ventures are:
The Best Selling Instrumental Rock Band in Music History
More than just another rock n roll band, the Wailers are major contributors to the history of Rock n Roll. Originally formed in 1958 the original members were John Greek (guitar), Mike Burk (drums), Rich Dangel (guitar), Kent Morrill (keys & lead vocal), Mark Marush (sax).
The Wailers recorded their first hit single, instrumental Tall Cool One that skyrocketed to top of the Billboard charts in 1959 leading to appearance on the Dick Clark Show and the Allen Freed concert shows and first U.S. tour followed by their first album the Fabulous Wailers. Returning at the end of summer 1959, Buck Ormsby, former bass player in the popular Northwest band, Little Bill & the Blue Notes, jammed with the Wailers through 1959 and joined the Wailers in 1960.
Members of the Wailers launched their own record label Etiquette Records in 1961 in Tacoma Washington, to release their own records, beginning with an original Wailer arrangement of Louie Louie as the first single, followed with the classic Spanish Castle live recorded album Wailers at the Castle.
During the 60s several Northwest artists recorded for Etiquette Records including the famous inspirational Sonics band.
Throughout the 60s a few changes in the Wailers line-up included Ron Gardner (sax and lead vocals), Neil Andersson (Guitar, now with Pearl Django) and Dave Roland (Drums). Along with Kent Morrill and Buck Ormsby this configuration of the Wailers continued to record and perform nationally until taking a well earned hiatus in 1969.
Reformed in the late 70s for a reunion concert, the Wailers brought back original guitar player Rich Dangel who performed with the Wailers until he passed away in late 2002. One of the most revered guitarists in the world, Rich was admired and emulated by a slew of guitar players throughout his career that included Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, George Harrison, famous jazz guitarist Howard Roberts and many more.
Today the Wailers continue to perform in concerts and at festivals touring the U.S., and are currently recording a new album, and just finished a co-produced album with the Walk Dont Run Ventures.
Current Wailers line-up are original members Kent Morrill (keys & lead vocals) and Buck Ormsby (Bass & bkgrd vocals), with Neil Rush (tenor & Barrie sax), John Hanford (guitar & vocals), and Ricky Lynn Johnson (drums & vocals).
The Wailers classic 60s recordings have been released internationally including their 40 Live CD celebrating 40 years performing and recording 25 singles, 14 LPs/CDs, and their most recent Cadillac To Mexico CD.
Recent tours of the East Coast and S.E. tours included New Orleans 2005 and Memphis 2006 sharing performances with major historic music makers from Atlantic, Sun, and the Stax Record labels. Both Concerts were sponsored by the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame where the Memphis 3 day event raised funds for the New Orleans Katrina musicians instrument fund.
